Here are three more ways to increase nutrient absorption. Drink water as your primary fluid. Eat natural foods rather than processed or refined foods. Eat raw vegetables for snacks and drink fresh vegetable and fruit juices whenever possible.

8) DRINK THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT TIME

I’ll be the first to agree that most people don’t drink enough water. Instead they drink diet sodas, coffee or artificial soft drinks. Most sedentary people should drink at least 8-10 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Those who train should drink even more water, especially in warm environments or if they sweat profusely.

If you feel that you should cut back on water because you are “holding” water, you are wrong. The less you drink, the more your body wants to hold on to every drop it has.

While water is critical to fat metabolism, protein digestion and organ function, too much water with meals can interfere with nutrient digestion and absorption. We tend to eat too fast and drink too much water with our meals, especially when we are both hungry and thirsty after training. This will dilute acids and enzymes in the digestive tract, compromising digestion. So with meals, drink whatever water is necessary to comfortably enjoy your meal, say a glass or two at most. If you come home thirsty from the gym, drink water right away before you eat. This water will be absorbed quickly and is less likely to cause a problem. Drink most of your water between meals throughout the day.

Carbonated soft drinks, whether diet or not, should be avoided with meals, especially protein meals. These drinks can drastically dilute and neutralize stomach acids essential for digestion.

Enjoy other beverages including coffee, tea, etc. in moderation as they may cause the body to excrete minerals like sodium, potassium or calcium. Remember, nothing is better for you than pure, good old-fashioned water.

9) EAT NATURAL FOODS
Avoid processed and refined foods whenever possible. Such foods are typically high in added fat, sugar and sodium, but they also have had many of their vitamins and minerals stripped from them.

Make a habit of reading labels! Even a product packaged to look like a wholesome “health food” may be tainted with artificial additives, high temperatures or other detrimental processing procedures. Many people are sensitive to these food additives and may react negatively. Natural or raw foods usually have most of their original nutrient contents intact and fewer undesirable additives.

10) CONSUME FRESH FRUITS, VEGETABLES & JUICES
Raw vegetables serve as an excellent snack. Vegetable and fruit juices are preferable to soft drinks, especially if you can “juice” them right at home for immediate consumption. Lately many of us have seen television “advertorials” on home juice machines and the many benefits of drinking fresh juices rather than commercial ones that have been pasteurized, processed, bottled and distributed.

While some experts feel that some claims made on television are exaggerated, it is true that fresh vegetable juices contain active enzymes that would rapidly be destroyed if they were processed. The same goes for canned vegetables that are processed at high temperatures. For instance, food processing can decrease chromium content of foods by as much as 80%. Other vitamin and mineral contents are known to suffer as well. Bottled juice, however, is still nutritious. The fresher the better!
